I’m a big believer that every workout is worth it, even if you hardly break a sweat. With that being said, some workouts are most definitely more effective than others and the ones that get you out of your comfort zones are definitely the ones to strive for.

Whilst lots of people might look at winter as a hurdle, I prefer to look at it as an opportunity to challenge yourself, test your resilience and commitment and to strive towards goals that you may have previously only worked for in the summer time.

Here are 5 of my favourite winter workouts and some of their amazing benefits:

Boxing

Nothing warms you up quicker than a session on the bag or the pads. Boxing truly is one of the best workouts you can do and it’s growing in popularity in Australia for very good reason. I especially love seeing women incorporating boxing into their routines. It’s a great way to build strength, cardiovascular fitness and most importantly— confidence. If you want to improve your agility, strength, speed, power and overall conditioning—boxing is a must!

Hot yoga

The cold is no excuse not to exercise when there are hot yoga studios popping up left, right and centre. I’m the first to admit that flexibility is not my strong suit but working on your weaknesses is the door to success. Yoga is great for improving muscle flexibility and tone but the benefits are honestly endless.

At-home HIIT

Yep, you heard it here first. Home workouts are on the rise and here to stay. You don’t even need to get out of your pyjamas to get a great workout in (though you might want to when the sweat starts dripping).

Outdoor run

Did you know that when the weather is cold, your body actually has to work harder (and burn more calories) trying to regulate your temperature. I love running in winter, and as a Tassie boy, one of my favourite runs is the Point to Pinnacle, starting at Wrest Point Casino and finishing at the top of Mount Wellington.

Cross-country skiing

Okay I get this doesn’t suit everyone, but if you’re heading to the slopes then lucky you! There’s so much more to the snow than a few blue runs and hot choccy. Cross-country skiing is an epic way to work up a sweat and get in a solid cardio workout. Hit the slopes Nordic style and earn yourself a well-deserved après-ski hot chocolate (or vino).

We all know that exercise releases endorphins, so beat those winter blues by working up a sweat and before you know it, summer will be here and you’ll be ten steps ahead of those who caved to the cold and didn’t get off the couch.
